Smith Dedication "A Good Night's Sleep"
The new home of Doug and Donna Smith was dedicated on May 18 at 146 Jack Bradley Road in Elizabethton. Over the past two months, more than 300 volunteers worked on the three bedroom house under the direction of Al Bentz, Site Supervisor; Lanelle Crockett, Project Coordinator; and Charlie Von Cannon, Volunteer Coordinator. Funding for the house was provided by the LaPorte family in loving memory of Joe LaPorte, Jr. The Smiths had been living in a dilapidated trailer in the woods. Doug described not being able to sleep for fear of snakes crawling in through the holes in the floor or a fire starting from the faulty wiring or wood stove they had to use for heat. "I will finally be able to get a good night's sleep." he said, as he signed the closing documents the day after the dedication. The Smiths are the first family to move into a Habitat home this year and the 182nd Habitat family to partner with the Holston affiliate since 1985.
