Sweat equity is work that a partner family contributes to the Habitat ministry. Relatives and friends may be recruited to help with the work, but the partner family must earn the majority of the sweat equity. Most sweat equity is done on the partner family’s house and the houses of others. However, other opportunities may be available such as lot maintenance, work in the Holston Habitat for Humanity Office or Resale Store, and other activities. Sweat equity is given for the Homeowner Education Program.

To remain in the program, a partner family must complete a minimum of 10 hours of sweat equity a month in addition to attendance at Homeowner Education sessions. To be matched for a build, the partner family must have completed the Homeowner Education Program and have a minimum of 250 sweat equity hours on record. To purchase a newly constructed house, a partner family must have completed 500 hours of sweat equity. To purchase a recycled house, they must have completed 400 hours.
At least 100 of the total required hours must be earned on the worksite. Under some conditions these requirements can be modified except for the need to complete all required sweat equity hours prior to closing.
