Youth Guidelines - 16 and Over

  • All youth working with Holston Habitat for Humanity must be adequately supervised and trained.
  • Anyone over the age of 18 can perform any of construction-related jobs on the site.
  • No one under the age of 18 should use power tools, assist with excavation, do roofing or work at heights above 6 feet.
  • Youth ages 14 and 15 may be at the build site when there is no active construction going on at the site.

Under 16

There are many ways youth under the age of 16 can be directly involved with the work of Habitat for Humanity without actually being on the work site during construction.

  • Sponsor fund raisers, such as car washes, walk-a-thons, bake sales, recycling programs, yard sales, etc.
  • Sponsor merchandise drive for the Habitat Resale Store.
  • Provide food for volunteers on the build site.
  • Baby-sit for volunteers or partner families so they can complete their sweat equity hours.
  • Paint baseboards or door frames off-site before they are put in the house.
  • Help with landscaping after construction is completed.

Why I Volunteer with Holston Habitat

  • “I like working in a Christian ministry and using my gifts to give something back to this world. I like the fact that Habitat is a hand up, not a hand out.” - Jerry Johnson (Board Member)
  • “I had experience with Habitat years ago and wanted to get involved when I moved here. I like building and I like the people. The Regulars are a great group to work with.” - Nobal King (Construction Volunteer - Kingsport Regulars)
  • “Habitat is a good thing. It’s fun to sell one person’s junk to someone else and know that all the money is going to build a home for a family. I like to make people happy. - Wayne Pruett (Resale Store Volunteer)
  • "At the end of a Habitat build, there is no greater sense of accomplishment than to stand at a home dedication, seeing a new family with tears streaming down their faces accept our gift of a Bible and the keys to their new home." - Lanelle Crockett (Board Member)
  • “I guess I have infectious Habitatitis. I am committed to the Habitat mission and inspired by the relationships I have made with partner families and other volunteers.” - Elizabeth Ann Hay (Holston Habitat Founder and Volunteer for 21 Years)
